Army of Buyers Storms Stores in State Street

Source: Chicago Daily News, 14 July 1933, pg. 1.

One of the biggest summer shopping armies in the memory of Chicago—an army representing all America—marched on State street today to celebrate dollar day.

At noon merchants declared that it was the biggest dollar day in the history of the street.

Gayly decorated in red, white and blue, the broad street welcomed hosts of Chicagoans and out of town visitors of A Century of Progress.

Acres of dollar bargains were the attractions. Walter L. Gregory, president of the State Street Council, declared:

"State street dollar day is one of the most important merchandising events of the year to Chicago and its suburban district.

"While the American dollar is somewhat of a 'shrinking violet' in the many markets of the world, on State street today it will regain all of its dignity and purchasing power.

"From Lake street to Congress in the greatest stores of the world and the small exclusive shops are offered bargains that in the van of the progress of inflation and the rise of prices, will be startling.

"Chicago is filled with visitors from many states and foreign lands. We know they will find in this great selling event on State street an opportunity to make their vacation dollars do a tremendous job.

"The last State street dollar day was a great outpouring by the buying public. We anticipate that today will set new high records for conservative spending by an intelligent buying public."
