Theater News Archive

The following is a selection of articles published in newspapers and trade magazines about Chicago's theaters during the early twentieth century. The articles vary in perspective. Some are highly sympathetic to the theater industry and its business interests. Others take a more critical view of the industry. Several address historically significant social and cultural issues such as censorship, government regulation of the theater trade, relations between theater management and employees, discrimination against patrons, audience behavior, and the role of theaters in everyday urban life.
