Fine Theater, Bum Film.

Source: Chicago Sunday Tribune, 22 January 1928, pt. 7, pg. 5.

Dear Miss Tinée: Did you ever see a bum show in a beautiful theater? The other day when you went over to the new United Artists theater, did you enjoy seeing "The Dove," or were you more impressed by the transformation of the ugly old Apollo into a place of real beauty? At least, in your review on the above picture you didn't say much about the beauty of the place, but gave this new Norma Talmadge picture a wonderful write-up. Don't you think it should have been vice versa?

Last evening when I stepped into this new theater I was so happy to see what a wonderful change had taken place and happy, too, because I thought I was going to see a good show (Mae Tinee said it was), and still more happy to knwo that the show was not going to be spoiled by a popular jazz rajah coming out and doing his stuff.

Of course, Miss Tinee, I know you are not a critic on theaters, but, wouldn't you rather see a good show in a bum theater? I know that last night when I left the new United Artists theater that was the way I felt. I had just seen one of the poorest pictures I have seen in a long time.

Is that your idea of a delightful show? Do you really think "The Dove" has been splendidly adapted to the screen? What would have become of this picture if Roland West hadn't had the glorious scenery to fall back on? True enough, Norma Talmadge is in it and that di make a difference. She does the best she can, but, O, how Noah Beery has ruined that picture?

That was one picture I would have walked out on, but, how could anybody walk out on Norma Talmadge? You betch my life I thought it was punk.

Respectfully,

HARRY.

Editor's note: Honest, Harry?
